Catherine Tan – VCE English as an Additional Language (EAL) Tutor

Key qualifications and details:

Hi there, I’m Catherine Tan and I graduated from Balwyn High School in 2014 with an ATAR of 99.05. In 2014, I dedicated my time almost entirely to preparing for my EAL exam, and now I hope that with this knowledge I can help some of you achieve your desired EAL study scores.

I understand the need to adapt my teaching methods to the unique learning and writing style  of each student, and will gladly accomodate and adjust accordingly. Flexibility is key in a subject like this, and I am more than happy to meet up with students for lessons that I will prepare.

Alternately, I can also mark essays online for a small fee as I understand that a lot of students will be looking for detailed feedback for their written essays at any given time as opposed to weekly sit down lessons. This is something I have experience with as I had many students seek out this service during 2015, all of whom were very satisfied with the detailed feedback, commentary and advice given in return.

Having also been Public Speaking Captain of my school, I will be very happy to work with students with an oral presentation tasks that may be set by the school.

In 2014, I did the Context topic ‘Identity & Belonging’ and studied the texts:

  • In the Country of Men – Matar Hisham
  • Summer of the Seventeenth Doll – Ray Lawler

I will be happy to read any other texts that students might be studying to ensure I have a thorough understanding of the novel and will bring on my own extensive collection of notes, resources and practise essays.

Overall, I look forward to getting to know students and working hard to get through the challenge of VCE!

All the best for the new year!

Rates, location and scores

I was and still am a raging fan of the EAL subject and in 2014, I acheived the highest SAC average of the cohort and was one of the only two students to achieve a perfect score in the subject, and had the pleasure of mentoring the other student to get a 50. I strongly believe that I have the knowledge and passion to help and motivate students do well.

I am happy to tutor in Monash Library during the uni semester, or in the Box Hill, Balwyn or Doncaster libraries/area. I live in Balwyn and can tutor students at my house, or alternatively can travel to a student’s house provided distance is not an issue. Small group tutoring is also offered if formed in advance and is recommended as peer learning is very important in a subject like this!
